The newest podcast to join the rotation in July 2022, James, in the middle of discovering the rich niche of trick taking & shedding card games, decided to publicly explore and discuss this huge catalog of games currently on the rise in the board game hobby. TRICKY aims to give exposure to games both new & old that the hosts believe deserve a look (or perhaps don’t) and explore relevant topics about card games. TRICKY also makes a dedicated effort to interview designers, artists, and other personalities of the card game world. Derek Daniels officially joined the show in July of 2023.

Card games were always a big part of my life growing up, from mainstream games like Uno and Skip-bo to older classics like Spades and Oh Hell. As I grew up, I started shifting towards board games as Catan became the go-to in my late teens/early twenties. Nowadays, I love trying out all sorts of games and striving for an omni-gamer approach to the hobby, but card games have come full circle as a passion of mine. When I’m not gaming, I love checking out new movies, spending time outdoors hiking/kayaking, and playing sports.

I’ve only been in the hobby a short time. Yet, in that time I have quickly discovered the types of games that most fascinate me and keep me coming back for more. Dads on a Map has much to do with that discovery, so I’m happy to be able to talk about games, specifically card games, with James on TRICKY once a month. Other than trick-takers/climbers/shedders, I like highly interactive designs with player-driven game states and chaos. I love games that foster unique board states via the player’s collective decisions and games that feature emergent complexity.
